The Art of Composting

BCCS has always integrated creativity into our community composting activities. Artist Dominic Thomas worked with us in our first year, cooking a trout in the compost to demonstrate its heat and providing fermented goodies for our launch. During Zero Waste Week (2009) our “Rubbish Artist in Residence” Gavin McClafferty worked with six Bisley families, going through their rubbish bags and, in his temporary studio in the Bisley Pavilion, created a public display of ‘rubbish’ sculptures.

To celebrate our 10th anniversary we have commissioned Slad poet Adam Horovitz to write a special poem. Bisley artist Jilly Cobbe is illustrating the poem.

Adam Horovitz is a poet and performer, active since the early 1990s. He grew up in the Slad valley and much of his writing examines the connection between people and landscape. His first collection, Turning, was published in 2011 and his memoir of growing up in the Slad valley, A Thousand Laurie Lees, was published in 2014. He is currently working on Little Metropolis, an album of poetry and music with Josef Reeve.
